NATURAL CHILDBIRTH BEFORE YOUR EYES!
THE COMPLETE STORY TOLD IN PHOTOGRAPHS ADAPTED FROM THE
INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED MOTION PICTURE: "THE CASE OF DR. LAURENT."
The First Motion Picture of
Natural Childbirth! Directed by Jean-Paul le Chanois
THE STORY BEHIND THIS MOST
UNUSUAL MOTION PICTURE
The creator of "The Case of Dr.
Laurent" is Jean-Paul Le Chanois, one of France's most noted motion
picture producers, writers and directors. Le Chanois, a doctor's
son, studied medicine himself. He was struck by the painful
atmosphere of delivery rooms and by particularly difficult
childbirths he witnessed. He was no longer faced with this problem
when he abandoned medicine for the cinema and it was only years
later that it once again presented itself to him in a most dramatic
Jean-Paul Le Chanois' mother suffered
a very serious attack one day. While Le Chanois and his old father,
the doctor, were nursing her, a young doctor came to visit the
mother. During the young doctor's visit, a controversy took place
between Le Chanois' 79-year-old father and his young colleague on a
question unknown to the director. He saw his father, almost
forgetting his sorrow, defend with passion "natural childbirth" of
which he had heard the previous evening at a conference given by
Professor Lamaze on the new method that he had recently started to
promote with success.
A professional argument arose during
which the young doctor, who was an intelligent and competent man,
nevertheless appeared to be "conservative" and backward in
connection with the art of medicine. The old doctor, for lack of a
better argument, finally declared: "I think I am the younger of the
two. . ." and heatedly asked him to take his leave.
Moviemaker Le Chanois realized that
this must truly be an extraordinary problem to impassion his father
at such a time. He questioned his father and the old man replied:
"You should make a movie on the subject.
An excerpt of this discussion will be
found in the film and the lovable old doctor, who appears toward the
end of the picture, is the Director's respectful tribute to his
Having become interested in the
question of "natural childbirth," Le Chanois tried to find out all
he could about it, He met Dr. Lamaze and found him to be a "great
man and a modest one"; a convincing man who told him about the
difficulties he encountered in promoting his new obstetrical
methods. Professor Lamaze invited Le Chanois to visit his clinic. Le
Chanois was moved, conquered and fascinated. He understood that a
"peaceful revolution" was taking place which could drastically
change the relationship between men and women.
Le Chanois witnessed several
deliveries which all seemed like so many miracles because of the
active and trusting cooperation of the mothers. He went to the
mountain country for "training" with a doctor who practiced this new
method. "This is even better than electricity," said an old peasant
who was attending her daughter's natural delivery.
It was at that moment that Le Chanois
began to write the screenplay of the picture.
WHAT IS NATURAL CHILDBIRTH?
Perhaps the easiest way to
answer the question "What is natural childbirth?" is to explain what
it is not. Natural childbirth is not childbirth as practiced in the
jungle. Among primitive peoples, childbirth is usually accompanied
by great fear. It is precisely this fear that often makes birth
difficult, for it causes the body to stiffen when it should be
relaxed. One of the chief aims of natural childbirth is to banish
fear through understanding.
Based on a pamphlet "Understanding
Natural Childbirth," issued by the Maternity Center Association, the
following is a comprehensive survey of the subject.
MOTHERHOOD The Natural Way
Throughout her pregnancy, every
mother-to-be should remember this simple fact - having a baby is one
of the natural functions of living. In childbirth, a woman's body
performs three functions. It protects and nourishes the baby that is
developing within. It brings that baby into the world when it is
ready to come. It provides for the newly born babe a right and ready
One of the first rules of nature is
that natural functions tend to follow a normal pattern. Thus, in
natural childbirth as it is practiced today, the doctor is primarily
concerned with guiding the mother so that the events of childbearing
will follow a normal course, unimpeded by ignorance and fear.
Today, many prospective parents want
to know all about this pattern and what they can do to keep it
normal. In many hospitals and health agencies throughout the
country, doctors, nurses, physical therapists and nutritionists are
working together to teach pregnant mothers all they want to know
about having babies.
ABOUT THIS BOOK
The black and white photographs
scenes in this book have been taken directly from the
widely-acclaimed motion picture "The Case of Dr. Laurent." Portrayed
by some of France's leading players, this film is a skillful and
unique blend of fact - with fiction that might well be fact. It
culminates in one of the most powerful sequences to appear on the
screen - the first motion picture of natural childbirth ever shown
to the public. Scientists and clergymen in many lands have praised
this remarkable sequence which, although delicately handled, makes
no compromise with reality. Like Doctor Laurent himself, this film
and this book have but one purpose - to banish fear and ignorance
with truth and knowledge. Medical progress will indeed have been in
vain if man refuses to look and to learn.
