Word-building puzzle contests have changed noticeably
since the first one appeared more than fifty years ago. Today, even the largest and most reputable promoter, AHA, has adopted a definite routine. This nationally-known sponsor, who has awarded more than ten million dollars in prizes, has switched from initial object-identification
puzzles in the preliminary stage to an all-word construction type at every level of his sought-for promotions. Thus, all the serious solver needs is the official dictionary, some helpful WORD and HOW-TO-WIN books, and he is all set to compete on an equal footing for cash and cars.

The principal purpose of P.A.W.S. is to enable you to study past award-winning solutions so you may better understand and profit from the work and methods of the masters. Notice that unkeyed letters (such letters are part of only one word) are no longer permitted. Notice, too,
that only flush left boldface words from a specific dictionary are allowed now.

Today, the first AHA tie-breaker consists of completing a 5 by 5 square with words reading horizontally, except for the mandatory BINGO which must appear either vertically or diagonally. Solving (constructing) 5x5 squares for AHA contests is a simple process that requires only one factor: concentration in examining all eligible 5-letter words. No
special skill or instruction is needed at this stage except strict adherence to the official rules.

Originally, in previous years, the shapes or outlines of the final charts were weird, unusual, bordering on the fantastic. Today, the final decisive charts are narrow oblongs...whether printed horizontally or vertically. The narrow part usually consists of 10 rows of boxes while the longer side contains 34 rows.

Reproduced in this book, along with the winning solutions, are excellent non-winning constructions submitted by former winners of top prizes in other word-building contests. Because the actual winning solutions of recent years are all copyrighted, we cannot reproduce them here. The substitutions, which are non-winning efforts of experts, are just as valid for our instructional purposes. For a more detailed listing of the words in this book, see our companion volume W.O.W.
