BRIDGE CONVENTIONS
 A guide to understanding techniques of
modern bidding.
Here, Edwin B. Kantar clarifies some
of the more popular conventions such as Stay-man, Jacoby, Blackwood,
Negative Double, Limit Raises, etc. Learn from the master.
What Kantar has tried to do in this
book is clarify some of the more popular conventions. He had noticed
that many bridge players use a convention after hearing a one or two
sentence explanation and then think they can handle it. Hah:
Although he had no proof he would be willing to bet that more
disasters than successes come from the use of a new convention until
both partners understand it rather well. Intervening bids in
particular have an annoying way of fouling up convention unless
there has been prior discussion. Also, responding to an artificial
or conventional bid can be troublesome.
In any case he has tried to go further than most books in explaining
the more popular conventions such as Stayman, Jacoby, Blackwood,
Negative Doubles, Limit Raises, etc. Now if you really wish to play
these conventions you will have more than the basics at your
disposal.
His final bit of advice is to only use conventions that you and your
partner understand and to try to get by with as few as possible
until you have mastered the ones you play. Then, perhaps you can add
one at a time until you know so many and are so thoroughly confused
(join the club) that you will wish that you had never even heard of
the word.

ANYONE CAN WIN OIL
AND GAS LEASES
 Shows how an average person can strike it
rich by participating in the U.S. federal government's procedure for
awarding oil and gas leases.
The federal government calls the
procedure for awarding oil and gas leases "Simultaneous Oil and Gas
Filings." The public and press have tagged these proceedings "Uncle
Sam's Legal Lottery," because basically it is a lottery. Once a
month in various Bureau of Land Management offices a drawing is held
to determine who gets the leases on government owned land for the
mineral (oil and gas) rights.
These drawings are open to any U.S. citizen 21 years of age or older
(unless you already hold leases for more than 246,080 acres in any
one state) An individual has the same chance as the largest oil
company to have his name drawn for one of the leases. An individual
can submit only one entry for any one parcel of 1 and...therefore
"ANYONE CAN WIN OIL AND GAS LEASES!"
The author of this book doesn't claim to be an oil and gas expert,
nor does he claim to be a geologist. He became curious after reading
several newspaper and magazine stories about persons "striking it
rich" in oil and gas leases. So he set about to find out how a
layman could participate in this little-known lottery. He read
everything about it that he could put his hands on. He wrote all the
government agencies that had anything to do with it. He wrote oil
companies, filing services, and anyone else he thought might know
something about it. He probed, pried, and found out all he could,
and finally participated in several drawings himself.
This booklet you are now reading is the result of his research. It
explains in easy-to-understand instructions how YOU as an average
person with no prior knowledge about oil and gas leases can
participate. It will show you how to do it yourself, if you desire,
without going through filing services or other middlemen that charge
a fee for filing for you.
You should be aware at the start that this is not a "get-rich-quick"
scheme. In the first place, leases are not offered on known
oil-producing land or lands that are currently producing oil. They
are offered on so-called "wildcat" lands which are speculative and
have not yet produced oil. Secondly, on each entry filed the fee is
$10.00, which is not refundable if your name is not drawn. Lastly,
even if your name should be drawn and you win a lease, there is no
guarantee that you ' 11 get rich, or even make a profit. But it is
possible, and others have done it, so why not you? If you have some
extra money and can "take a gamble" then give it a try!
