This volume is intended to help participants in word-building contests such as AHA, and similar promotions where the pocket dictionary is used. Winners were contacted to obtain the crossword puzzle solutions that appear in our companion volume P.A.W.S. (Past Award Winning Solutions) Those that were submitted to us were carefully analyzed and dissected, and the winning words included in this volume.

Several prize winners graciously sent us two-word and three-word combinations they had used in their submissions. These valuable word-building creations appear on the final page of this originally devised and unusual volume.

Words that appear in P.A.W.S., but do not appear in bold-face type in the official contest dictionary, have been omitted from this W.O.W. listing. In previous years, some contest promoters permitted the use of other dictionaries, but most no longer do so.

Please observe, also, that some words are followed by an asterisk (*) This indicates that the word is not allowed in tie-breaking charts issued by AHA and some other promoters. In all puzzle contests, be sure you fully understand and follow the rules. Know which official dictionary is being used..which words are allowed and which words are barred. 
In using this word book (or ANY word book), contestants are cautioned to be completely conversant with the sponsor's regulations.

We have attempted something new. Since most winning solutions contain short words (as is readily perceived when the solutions in our companion volume P.A.W.S. are studied), we have placed the short positional words at the beginning of this book for easy and instant use. We believe this will facilitate the selection of useful words.

Another important aspect of word-building is that the shorter the word, the higher the final grand total will be. The obvious reason for this is that when a long word is used, it must include several low-value letters. These unwanted letters impart to the entire word a lower value PER LETTER. The valuable phrase (value per letter) is what the experts always strive to increase.
