of book, and a book, the likes of which you have never
read before. It tells the truth about one aspect of selling
by mail that very few dealers and writers in this field care
to discuss. Yet this aspect is so basic in nature and so
essential to your understanding before you start a Mail
Order business that it is imperative it be brought to your attention.

It is simply this: SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST NOT SUITED FOR A MAIL ORDER BUSINESS.

And the obvious corollary is: YOU MAY BE ONE OF THEM.

Most Mail Order dealers, publishers, writers, etc., have a stake in making the average "beginner" believe it is a simple matter to sell by mail, and that once you are established the money will keep rolling in without much effort.

This is far from true. In this book I try to explain why. Some of the statements made may disillusion you, some may disappoint you and some may even make you give up the idea. Nevertheless, on the whole, and probably to ninety-nine out of a hundred readers, the book will be very helpful.

No matter how hard he tries, Mr. "A." can never be come a bricklayer because of physical reasons. No matter how much Mr. "B." yearns to play "Hamlet" on the stage, he is too temperamental. No matter how deeply Mr. "C." desires to buy a "Lucky Leo" fast-food franchise, he is financially unable to do so. In the same way, as you read this book, you may find that you are either unable or unwilling to follow the guidelines I have set up as being necessary to your success in the Mail Order business.

When this happens, consider them carefully, honestly and sensibly. Then make your decision on practical considerations. I can truthfully say that in most cases the problems posed by these adverse factors are not insurmountable, and that with patience and perseverance they can be overcome. Few people ever enter the Mail Order business under less favorable circumstances that I did on that winter day in 1926 when I sent my first advertisement away to a national magazine. I was not aware then of any of the factors mentioned in this book. Yet here it is, half a century later, and I am still going strong. That should certainly be encouraging to you.

This book contains, in condensed form, practically everything I have learned during those fifty years. It is presented in my own style. It is not to be considered literature by any stretch of the imagination. It is simply
useful information and practical advice - given just as if you were sitting on the other side of my desk and I were talking to you.

I began this book about two years ago. I had my outline made up and envisioned pretty well what it would be like. However, I put it aside and did not take it up again until, through unexpected circumstances I found myself in Deerfield Beach, Fla. this past Winter with some extra time on my hands. The original draft was written there. After I returned home, it was revised a little, some additions and deletions were made, and off it was sent to the printer.

In conclusion, "Factors That Determine Mail Order Success" is probably the last book I shall ever write. It is a wise counselor who follows for himself the same advice he gives others. At sixty-six I am beginning to realize my limitations. Yet there is considerable satisfaction in knowing that, when I am no longer actively selling by mail myself, others will be doing so, and hopefully, being successful because of the words I have written.
