ABOUT THE AUTHOR
William Sunners is probably the oldest and best-informed contest
authority today. He has been competing for prizes or writing about
them for more than 65 years, having begun in high school. Then, he
competed for one-dollar prizes offered by a morning newspaper, the
New York American. It was in the middle of the 1930's, during the
Great Depression, that he won the largest number of prizes ranging
from a ten-cent cancelled stamp for an advertising slogan to winning
an automobile in two successive years. His entries were written in
pleasing rhyme. He won a third car in 1948 with a prose statement.
Sunners has been featured in newspapers and magazines, appearing on
various television programs beginning in 1959 with Betty Furness, long associated with NEC, in the old Mosque Theatre in Newark, NJ.

In 1949, he wrote a best-selling book, "How To Win Prize Contests" that went into five editions and sold over 100,000 in eight years. Since then, he has produced more than twenty books about puzzles and contests. His first work, written in 1947, "American Slogans," was slanted to the advertising profession, sold over 5,000 copies in six months. His latest book, "How To Make And Sell Original Crosswords," is outselling three competing volumes.

Bill Sunners was the first human being anywhere to write and distribute a course on constructing crossword puzzles, 1934-36. Since then, he has been followed by a dozen emulators. New York Magazine devoted three pages for a feature article about him and his contest achievements in its March 26, 1979 issue.
