The history of baseball has become confused by thousands of colorful
legends and myths that have sprouted from the imaginations of
sportswriters, fans, promoters and the baseball players themselves. The
history of the game has been exaggerated and twisted. Stories about even
the most colorful stars have been stretched beyond recognition. Even the
most educated broadcaster, the most diehard fan might no longer know the
truththat the designated hitter rule was not a product of the 1970s, that
the first World Series game was not lost by a team ironically named the
New York Mets, and so on.
To truly understand the history of the game and the stars and teams that
have made baseball what it
is today, one must first strip away the legends. Only then can one
understand how closely the
history of the game has paralleled the history of the last hundred years
in the United States. Babe Ruth did not call his shot. Abner Doubleday did
not invent baseball. Jackie Robinson was not the first
Black ballplayer in the major leagues. Only then can one understand that
the sport wasn't always a
multibillion dollar industry, that scoreboards weren't always electronic,
that ballplayers didn't
always play for million dollar sums while wearing double-knits. Baseball
has had its share of
scandals, financial worries, ups and downs and rowdy stars. The true story
of our national pastime
is even more exciting than the myths.
