Laurel Reith first offered the excellent information in this book in the form of a twelve-installment course, one lesson per month for a year. It was considered to offer so much worthwhile down-to-earth information that he was persuaded to combine his lessons and put them all together into one book. 

Mr. Reith has definite opinions about sweepstakes, and offers plenty of them in
this book. In fact, some of his opinions differ quite a bit from other books on
the subject. Everyone felt, however, that his story should be told. Many have learned some things from him and feel that you can, too, whether you are a beginner or more experienced in sweepstakes.

Perhaps in his modesty, Mr. Reith didn't include in his course any biographical
information about himself. We persuaded him to write a little about his
background, which we are including at the beginning of the book. We are putting it at the beginning instead of at the end because we think if you read about the man you'll have confidence in him, realizing that he knows well the subject that he writes about.

As a "bonus," he also included a lesson on refunding, which you will find at the end of this book.

Mr. Reith writes:

"One of the most important words in the English language is "HOW" and what most folks who enter sweepstakes want to know is "HOW" to enter and "HOW" to win. But does anyone have the magic key? My wins both in sweepstakes and contests have been far above average, still I do not claim to have the magic key or the magic touch - but I do have a large bump of stick-to-it-iveness and I personally think that is the "HOW" that it takes, if there is a "HOW."

"One correspondent wrote me he had sent in one entry a day, seven days a week, for over a year, on each and every contest or sweeps that came to his attention. What a postage outlay! Well, he certainly wasn't putting all his eggs in one basket - but I believe he might have done better had he picked out two or three good sweeps, with prizes that he would like to win, and then to have sent three or four or five entries a day to each of those three or four he liked. Sweepstakes is one place where I think it might pay to put all your eggs in maybe only two or three baskets. It increases your chances percentage wise.

"I usually look at the bottom prize and if it isn't worth the postage I am going to
invest, I pass it up entirely. The smart contester or sweepstaker will try to learn "HOW" by studying the ways of those who have entered and won over and over again. Those who have won and seem to know "HOW" to make a success of sweepstakes for themselves can give us the know  "HOW" which they used to gain success. Most contesters and "sweepers" are generous enough about telling you anything you want to know about "HOW" they win.

"Luck plays a large part in sweepstakes - but it isn't all luck. Luck often brings
us unexpected success - but we need to have the pluck to stick with whatever we are doing. No one, however, should get the idea that luck will bring about
success - you have to work for it. And the luckiest people find that the harder
they work at it the luckier they get. Luck just provides the opportunity. And I
personally think that "being born under a lucky star" is a lot of bunk.

"Oh, of course, a blind pig will find an acorn once in a while and a lone entry will win - but not often. You never know what you are able to do until you try. Some folks never try or else try in a halfhearted manner..an entry here, and entry there. You cannot win sweepstakes that way. Make up your mind that you are going to win and then send in enough entries in one or two or three contests or sweeps - as many as your postage budget will allow. Make up your mind how much postage you can afford and want to invest. Then select a few sweeps with good prizes that you would like to have, and stick with it. Don't lack confidence in yourself or your ability to win - or the will to win. Don't be easily discouraged. Nurture that bump of confidence, ability, and above all, stick-to-it-iveness. Follow the rules - print if it says print - write if it says write - address the envelope correctly and legibly.

"This course is offered in simple, easy-to-understand words. They are the only kind I know. My articles are like the girl with the boyish figure, straight from the shoulder. I do not believe in flowery expressions. Flowers are fine in their place. I love 'em, but in a course such as this they are best when cut. Often they are artificial anyhow."
