Whilst the traditional oracles might be inclined to interpret the dream illustrated in terms of FISH or even HAND, a modern interpretation would take into account the whole complex both of the dream situation and the psychological condition of the dreamer. From one point of view a dream is a random collection of individual thoughts and feelings which under the sensory deprivation of the dreaming experience produces for the conscious mind a sequence of bizarre associations, unrelated in regard to time and space. This accounts for the illogicality of dreams, for logic is not applicable since the dream is not directly related to the mind but is more closely connected with the emotions which have their own form of 'logic'. 

In sleep one part of the mind is deprived of external stimuli and is subject to an almost random series of associations which are noted not as a shadowy interplay of ideas, as in normal thinking, but as 'real' experiences. Anxiety is the chief force which heightens the receptivity of the brain to certain chains of associations and so there is in fact a degree of selectivity which gives rise to the apparently 'random' selection of data in a dream. In the example illustrated it is the anxiety concerning the daughter which actually sparked off the chain of 'illogical' associations involving the child.
